Cross Country Banquet is a great success

November 22, 1998 -- The Cross Country Banquet last night was a great success. Almost all of the  athletes were present, and everyone had fun visiting and eating. Thanks to TGIFriday's Front Row Grill at the Ballpark for their hospitality. The food was excellent, and the atmosphere was lively (and loud). Coach Batzel and Coach Knight awarded certificates to the following groups: junior varsity, varsity, regional meet participants, and state meet participants. Special attention was given to juniors Audrey De Zeeuw and Liz Loveless, our two state meet participants, who both finished in the top ten in the state meet and who both garnered All-Region and All-State honors. Most Valuable Runner awards were presented to freshman Billy Ray Thomas, who led the boys to a regional qualifying spot for the sixth year out of the last seven, and to De Zeeuw, who finished 1st in District, 1st in the Region, and 5th in the State. With all of the girls and boys who ran at the Region meet returning, the outlook is bright for next year. Go Warriors!

Jacoby attends State meet

November 15, 1998 -- Audrey De Zeeuw and Liz Loveless are used to running in front of their coaches and families, but who else would venture out into the rain and mud to watch a cross country meet in Round Rock? Martin High School Principal Steve Jacoby, that's who. De Zeeuw and Loveless were honored and surprised, as they celebrated their top-ten finishes, to see Mr. Jacoby appear to congratulate them. That's real school spirit! Click on the image below to see a larger version.

De Zeeuw and Loveless finish in top ten at State

November 15, 1998 -- Running in adverse conditions, Audrey De Zeeuw and Liz Loveless finished outstanding individual seasons by both finishing in the top ten at the UIL State 5A Cross Country Meet. The course was sloppy from two days of rain, but there was just some drizzle off and on for most of the morning. After the 4-A girls finished running, however, the skies opened up and it flat-out rained. The 5-A girls had to run through puddles that were up to mid-calf in depth, and the rolling hills of the course that would be so tame in dry weather were slick and treacherous.

De Zeeuw tripped and fell flat on her stomach on a hairpin turn about 200 meters into the race, cutting her left knee and both hands. By the time that she got up, twelve girls had passed her. Many runners would find that too much to overcome, but Audrey had moved back into 6th place by the 800-meter mark and stayed there for much of the race. On the final stretch she moved up as high as 4th and ended in 5th with a time of 12:26, only nine seconds behind Risa Rutland of Sugar Land Clements, who won the race in 12:17.

Loveless slipped at the start and was running in 40th place at the 800-meter mark, but she was within 30 meters of about twenty runners. She gradually started moving up and was in 18th place with 800 meters to go. She continued to gain on the pack, moving up to 11th place with 50 meters to go, and surged past Courtney Carter of Mesquite with about 30 meters to go to claim 10th place in 12:34.

De Zeeuw and Loveless earned medals and All-State honors for their efforts. They were the only 5-A girls from the Dallas-Fort Worth area to finish in the top ten, and Martin was one of only three schools to place more than one runner in the top ten. The other two were Amarillo, which won the meet, and Kingwood, which finished second in the meet.

De Zeeuw, Loveless qualify for State

November 8, 1998 -- Audrey De Zeeuw and Liz Loveless became Martin's first runners to qualify for the State cross country meet since 1992. De Zeeuw, a junior, is the 1998 Region I Champion, winning in 11:39.08 and becoming Martin's first regional champion in cross country. She led for the last mile and a half of the race and was never seriously challenged. Loveless, also a junior, finished seventh in 11:52.29. She was 11th at the one-mile mark and steadily gained after that. The entire Martin girls team had an outstanding race and almost qualified for the State meet, losing third place to El Paso Montwood by 150 to 154 points. Freshman Andrea Sparks finished 39th in 12:44.40, junior Jennifer Jacobs came in 70th in 13:06.06, sophomore Sarah Babineau finished 83rd in 13:13.60, and juniors Julie Boyer (91st, 13:17.70) and Christina Thomas (115th, 13:42.98) also ran strong. (There were 184 runners in all).

The young Martin boys team struggled against an outstanding Region I field, finishing 22nd. They were led by freshman Billy Ray Thomas (82nd, 17:37.30) and sophomore Artiz Stroud (98th, 17:47.72), and sophomore Micah Phillips (143rd, 18:46.95), junior John Gonzalez (156th, 19:01.28), and sophomores Jeff McCartney (165th, 19:37.40), Jesse Keenan (166th, 19:39.87), and Steve Gundy (168th, 19:43.94) all ran hard.

Martin girls and boys both going to Lubbock

November 1, 1998 -- The Martin girls finished second and the boys finished third, earning both a trip to Lubbock next weekend for the Region I-5A cross country meet and making Martin the only district school to send both of its teams to Regionals. The girls were somewhat disappointed, as the second-place finish ended a string of seven consecutive district championships. However, everyone tried their best; Sam Houston was just ever-so-slightly better as a team. The girls were led by Audrey De Zeeuw, Liz Loveless, and Andrea Sparks, who finished 1-2-6. Other varsity runners were Sarah Babineau (17th), Jennifer Jacobs (20th), Julie Boyer (24th), and Molly Averitte (26th).

The boys pulled off a big upset by beating out Duncanville for third. They were led by Artiz Stroud (13th) and Billy Ray Thomas (16th), and the pack running of Micah Phillips (19th), Matt Altschul (20th), and Steve Gundy (21st) sealed third place for the Warriors. Other varsity runners were John Gonzalez (26th) and Jeff McCartney (31st).

The Martin JV girls won district, and the boys finished second. The JV girls were led by Christina Thomas (1st), Corey Diehl-Miller (3rd), Katie Ozenick (4th), and Megan Babineau (7th). The JV boys were led by Jesse Keenan (5th), Aaron Thomas (8th), Brandon Cabello (10th), and Jay Fuquay (11th).

Ozenick runs at Ken Gaston

October 25, 1998 -- Most Warriors took the week before District off, but freshman basketball player Katie Ozenick finished 36th in the 5A varsity girls race at the Ken Gaston Invitational at Vandergriff Park with a time of 13:22.40. Considering that Ozenick, who also plays select soccer, has not trained for cross country at all this season, that is an amazing time.

Martin meet washed out

October 4, 1998 -- Heavy rain caused the cancellation of the Martin Invitational that was scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 1998. The steep hills that make the course at Veterans Park so challenging also made the course unsafe when the steep downhill and uphill stretches became slick with mud. We appreciate everyone that registered or came out, and we apologize for not being able to contact all of you in advance to save you a wasted trip to the park. Next year, we will have a rainout number that you can call for that type of information.
